Some important benefits in obtaining Canadian Citizenship are obtaining a Canadian Passport, the right to vote, and travel freely to most countries in the world without a visa requirement. Additional rights and privileges are afforded to Canadian citizens that are not afforded to permanent residents of Canada.
If you are an adult wishing to obtain Canadian citizenship, you must meet the following criteria:
- be 18 years of age or older;
- be a permanent resident of Canada;
- have lived in Canada for at least three of the four years before applying;
- be able to demonstrate knowledge about Canada and the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship (a test is required of every adult ages 18-54 years).
Dual Citizenship
Canada allows dual citizenship and does not require its new citizens to renounce their previous citizenship(s). According to Canadian laws, you may be a citizen of Canada and as many other countries as you wish.
However, the laws of some foreign countries require their citizens to forfeit their citizenship before they take on a second or before they assume permanent residence elsewhere.
